Luau Birthday Party Games

Make a backyard into a Hawaiian paradise

Luau party games incorporate the elements of Hawaiian life and entertainment and fashion, such as the hula skirt, leis, fire dancing and traditional Hawaiian music. Having a luau party means taking the guests away from the beach and water and into the world of Hawaiian culture. Does this Spark an idea?

Stack the leis

Utilize the traditional Hawaiian floral necklace, or lei, in luau games. Divide the teams into pairs. Hand each member of the pairs several leis. Ask each duo to designate one person as the lei placer and the other as the lei wearer. Give each of the pairs 30 seconds to place as many leis on the designated person as possible. The pair that has the most leis on the designated person wins. Give extra points for creative lei placement. Depending on the age of the competitors, you can make the game as challenging as needed. For example, forbid players from using their hands or forbid leis from touching each other if they are to count in the team's total.

Sand Hunt

Construct a sandbox in a large, flat area. Hide all of the pieces required to make a hula outfit, including a grass skirt, coconut bra, sunglasses, thong sandals and a Hawaiian shirt in the sand. Give all of the participants a small shovel and on go, instruct each person to begin digging and find all the pieces required to make their own hula outfit. Once each participant has found all of the pieces, he or she must put on all of the clothing as fast as possible. The winner of the game then gets to spray all the other participants with a hose to cool them off after all the digging.

Hula Hoop Endurance

This is a game that can be played by adults and children alike. Give each participant his or her own hula hoop. Place them in a line and instruct each person to begin spinning their hula hoops on particular body parts on go. The first person in line has to spin the hula hoop while performing another task, such as singing a song or making up a poem. If this person cannot successfully complete this task, he or she is out. The next person then must perform a task, and so on. Each eliminated player sits out and the players who successfully performed their task move onto the next round. The rounds continue until there is one person left hula hooping. This person is the winner of the game and wins a prize.
