Luau Decoration Activities For Kids

Use pineapples to create luau decorations.

Most children enjoy making crafts at home and school. When planning a luau party or gathering, children can make luau crafts that can be used as decorations. Use the decorations to turn the party area into a tropical paradise, or allow the children to decorate their own rooms. From homemade leis to decorated pineapples, children can have fun creating luau decorations.

Leis

Children can create a variety of leis to use for Hawaiian decorations. Make simple leis using colored straws, yarns and foam flowers. They must cut the straws into 1- or 2-inch sections. Thread the flowers and straws onto the yarn to create flower leis. Other options include silk flowers, seashells, twine, beads and construction paper flowers. You also can allow the children to use real flowers to create the leis, though real flowers will only last a few days.

Sand

Make bottled sand art or sand pictures using colored sand from your local craft store. Children can use small funnels to fill up clear bottles. Have them create several layers of different colored sand in the bottles. Decorate the bottles by using hot glue to attach seashells to the lid or outside of the bottles. Children can draw a picture using glue and paintbrushes. Have them sprinkle colored sand on glue before it dries to create sand pictures. For example, they can paint an ocean and sprinkle blue sand on it, then draw a sun and sprinkle yellow sand on it.

Seashells

Use seashells to create a variety of luau decorations. Make picture frames and an assortment of boxes. Hot glue seashells to the outside of a picture frame. For added decoration, paint the seashells in a variety of colors. If children will use the frame for decoration in their room, they can paint the seashells in the colors of their room. Another idea is to write your name using the seashells on the outside of a box. Use seashell-decorated boxes as centerpieces on tables for a party, or for jewelry boxes. Fill boxes for a luau party with flower leis or tropical party favors.

Pineapples

Create pineapple faces by drawing and coloring eyes, ears and other facial features on construction paper. Cut out the features and glue them to the pineapple to create a face. Paint the leaves on top of the pineapple to create the hair. Make an edible pineapple decoration using wooden skewers and fruit chunks. Place several pieces of fruit on wooden skewers and stick the ends of the skewers into the pineapple. Use the decorated pineapples as edible centerpieces for a luau.
